What does a Professional Medical Coder do?

A medical coder reads a patient’s file and translates everything in the file to a universal code accepted by insurance companies. Everything that happens at each appointment is analyzed and assigned a code by the medical coder. This includes supplies used, diagnosis and treatment.

Medical coders can work in a variety of settings. As a medical coder, you can work in private practice, in a large healthcare network, in long-term care settings or even in urgent care centers.
